After the success of Netflix’s first original German series Dark in December 2017 and the exclusive US release of the hit series Babylon Berlin earlier this year, subscribers will be getting another taste of Germany as the streaming service announced it will be producing yet another hopeful German hit with The Wave.
Based on the 2008 award-winning film of the same name, The Wave will reunite the film’s creators and producers to adapt the story into an extensive new episodic series.
Like the movie, The Wave will follow a group of rebellious teens who set out to create their own community to uprise against the establishment. What was supposed to be the pursuit of a better society, the phenomenon turns into a wave of terrifying events that result in this new community turning into an out of control playground.
“We are excited to produce The Wave for Netflix and enjoy the creative freedom to turn this powerful and compelling story into a German series with a strong global appeal”, said Christian Becker and Executive Producer Dennis Gansel adds: “The Wave conveys a message that is more relevant than ever – and not only in Germany, but worldwide.”
The first season of The Wave is set to go into production later this year with an expected global release date set for 2019.
