In the Fade

‘In the Fade’ Snubbed Oscar Nomination for Best Foreign Film

Germany’s hit film In the Fade has had a good month so far, taking home many awards including a Golden Globe, but there is one major award the film will not receive: an Oscar.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released their nomination shortlist for the 2018 Academy Awards on Tuesday, and while the stars appeared to be aligning for In the Fade to not only make it on the list, but also possibly win the Oscar, the movie was nowhere to be found among the nominees.

While the news is sad, Germany still has a shot at receiving some Oscar fame in the Foreign Language Film category. The Square, which the Academy is officially recognizing as a film from Sweden, did receive a nomination this year and was produced in partnership with Germany and France. All three countries were up for the award during the Golden Globes and the film was originally considered a guarantee win before In the Fade was announced as the winner.

We may not be able to root for In the Fade at this year’s Oscars on March 4th, but if you’re still hoping to see a unnoficial German win, The Square is a deserving alternative.
