Mitte Water Filter

CES: Mitte Promises the Cleanest Drinking Water Enhanced for Your Life

Americans spend a total of $16 billion a year on bottled water, which sell at an estimated 2,000x premium over the water that comes out of the tap, and that is on top of the water filter pitchers or fridge filters being used in most homes. So it is pretty clear that we have an obsession over clean drinking water — not a bad obsession to have — but for one German startup, an even cleaner water is being promised with the upcoming release of Mitte.

Mitte launched a successful Indiegogo campaign in the fall for their in-home water filtration device that the company says will “harness the power of the natural water cycle” to bring you water that is 60x cleaner than your typical filtered water and 3x cleaner than reverse osmosis systems. Plus, instead of ridding the water of every mineral, good and bad, Mitte uses a cartridge system to balance the water with just the right minerals for your lifestyle.

Three water filter options will be available at launch: mitte® Balance for a neutral tasting water most of us are used to drinking, mitte® Vitality for a higher mineral content and complex flavor profile geared towards those looking to improve their physical and mental health, and mitte® Alkaline for those looking for a high-PH water rich in minerals and antioxidants.

The Mitte does come with a hefty €429 (~$500) price tag, plus more for the filters, but the company did release data showing the ultimate cost savings over bottled water. At a cost of €0.10 ($0.12) to €0.13 ($0.15) per liter, Mitte is about a third of the cost of your average bargain bottled water. Of course those bottles of water don’t come with a $500 upfront investment.

With only a few months to go before the first Mitte machines are set to ship to early backers, Mitte is using CES in Las Vegas to demonstrate the power of their filter and the smart capabilities built-in to enhance the device even further with the help of an app on your phone. General availability of the device is expected later this year.
