An east coast blizzard has halted the much-anticipated meeting between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Donald Trump on Tuesday. Leaders from Germany’s Siemens and BMW were also scheduled to travel with Merkel to have their own meetings with Trump during the visit. Because of the meeting’s importance, Merkel and Trump have rearranged their schedules so that the two can make another attempt this Friday, but whether the business leaders originally scheduled for today’s visit will be coming instead is unclear.
During his campaign, Trump had publicly lashed out against Merkel and her recent policies, including a speech last March in Iowa where he addressed her handling the refugee crisis and Cologne New Years Eve attacks by stating: The German people are going to end up overthrowing this woman. I don’t know what the hell she is thinking.”
Merkel is said to be preparing for a confrontational visit with the new president, which will be a contrast to her more friendly meetings with former president Barack Obama. She has had brief calls with Trump after winning the presidency, but she stated in regards to this visit, “one-on-one conversations are always much better than talking about each other,” and that has become her slogan for the upcoming visit.
