Lidl fans will have something to look forward to this summer as the German discount grocer announced on Wednesday that they were preparing to open their first round of stores much sooner than originally planned. Instead of the previous late-2017 or 2018 launch, Lidl will start opening the doors to their first 20 stores sometime this summer.
In a statement, Lidl confirmed that their first round of 20 stores will be located in Virginia, where the company’s US headquarter is situated, North Carolina and South Carolina. Within a year though, Lidl is committed to opening a total of 100 stores.
While Lidl’s German rival Aldi has had a 41-year head start on the chain, the two companies have been competing side by side across Europe for years. The real question is whether or not Lidl can grab the attention of a majority of consumers who are completely unfamiliar with the brand.
