It was reported in late-June that the studio behind the Oscar-nominated movie, Das Boot, was working on a followup TV mini-series to air sometime in 2018, and while the original announcement left out any plans for a U.S. release, new developments offer up some hope for American fans.
LA-based Sonar Entertainment announced on Tuesday that it will join Bavaria Fernsehproduktion and Sky Deutschland to co-produce the eight-episode series and will hold the global distribution rights outside of Germany, Austria, U.K., Ireland and Italy — Sky’s five European territories.
The Das Boot reboot is not a retelling of the original story, but a continuation of where the movie left off, expanding its focus on the experiences of the French Resistance and Allied forces.

Information on casting has not been released, but considering that the new series takes place during the same time as the original, members of the original cast aren’t expected to make a return.
Filming is scheduled to begin in 2017, and information on when and where the series will run has not been announced. We have reached out to Sonar Entertainment for more information on the American distribution, and will update this post as more details become available.
