Yes, you read the headline correctly. Hamburg’s St. Pauli party district is home to millions of visitors every year, but as soon as late evening rolls around, the town can often be littered with obnoxious and messy drunks that have no shame when it comes to public urination. The community, tired of waking to piss soaked walls and playgrounds, wanted to combat the problem, and the solution is quite clever.
The St Pauli Interest Community (IG St Pauli) found the solution in a special hydrophobic paint that will deflect any liquid that hits it, meaning that when someone pisses against one of the coated surfaces, they will find their own urine shooting back at them.
It was clear that signs alone were not effective deterrents, so getting soaked in your own urine was seen as a much better solution to combat the problem.
Most walls that have been known to be popular pissing locations have been coated with the paint, but Julia Staron of IG St Pauli said in the group’s ‘St. Pauli Pinkelt Zurück’ (‘St. Pauli Pees Back’) video, not every spot has a warning sign posted, so “street pissers be aware, as not every wall has a warning sign. From now on, its peeback time!”
