Sitting or standing while urinating is a topic of discussion more commonly found in Germany than the United States, and while it is still quite normal for men to stand at the toilet, a German court had to set the law and declare that it is a man’s right to urinate while standing.
The question was raised in a Duesseldorf court when a landlord claimed a tenant damaged the marble floor in the bathroom by the splashing of urine that resulted from peeing while standing, and sought damages of €1,900 ($2,200).
While the judge agreed with the expert reports that the damage was indeed done by uric acid, it was determined that even with the “growing domestication of men in this matter, urinating while standing up is still common practice.”
So when in Germany, piss how you want, unless you come across one of those little signs above the toilet forbidding the standing position.
