It turns out German Chancellor Angela Merkel has an adventurous side to her, or at least that is what it seems when the news broke that she had suffered a skiing injury during her Christmas holiday in Switzerland.
While out doing some cross-country skiing around the Swiss resort of Engadin, Merkel traded in her skiing equipment for crutches when she fell at what is being described a low speed. Government spokesman Steffen Seibert commented that the Chancellor experienced “heavy bruising combined with an incomplete fracture of the left rear pelvic ring.”
As a result, Merkel has had to cancel many of her scheduled appointments for the next three weeks in order to provide time for rest and healing. Visits requiring air transportation are also out of the question as doctors have insisted that it is not safe for Merkel to fly, thus causing her to cancel her upcoming trip to Poland.
The accident has come right after Merkel began her third term as Chancellor, and this new down time will allow her to possibly focus on issues closer to home. While she will be spending most of the three weeks confined in her home, Merkel will be in full communication with government officials and is planning on leading her first cabinet meeting for the year on Wednesday.
