This year’s New York Steuben Parade, which will see thousands line up across the Fifth Avenue route, will be featuring three well-known Grand Marshals on September 21st. US soccer legend Werner Roth, the man running Germany’s Dinkelacker beer, Christian Dinkelacker, and German parliament member Harald Leibrecht, will be leading this year’s parade.
Werner Roth captained the New York Cosmos soccer team during the 1970s and found his way into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1989. During his time on the team, Roth led some great soccer players, including Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer, Italy’s Giorgio Chinaglia, and the Brazilian legend Pelé. As the New York Cosmos make their long-awaited return to the North American Soccer League, Werner Roth is working closely with the new team ahead of their game on August 3rd.
Being named a Grand Marshal doesn’t make this Werner Roth’s first major involvement with the New York Steuben Parade though. Back in 1978, just coming off of the Cosmos’ 1977 Soccer Bowl championship, Roth had the honor of crowning the Steuben Parade Queen, Connie Rom.
Christian Dinkelacker isn’t without his own class of fame however. Keeping up the family business, Dinkelacker runs the well-known German brewery under the same name, which has been brewing its specialty beers in Stuttgart since 1888. For the 1964 World Fair in New York City, Dinkelacker beer made its US debut, and can still be found on tap in two of the city’s longstanding German restaurants: Heidelberg on Manhattan´s Upper East Side and Zum Stammtisch in Glendale.
Harald Leibrecht is an American-born member of the German Parliament (Bundestag) who has been responsible for international relations, international commerce and cultural & educational initiatives. He was born in Evanston, Illinois, but spent many of his years living in Germany, including studying business in Heidelberg. As of 2011, Leibrecht has been working specifically as the German parliament’s coordinator for transatlantic affairs, which has him involved in leading various exchange programs between the US and Germany.
The New York Steuben Parade has a great lineup for 2013, and is covering a wide set of interests. If you want to get the chance to meet this year’s Grand Marshals, they will be officially introduced during the Annual Steuben Parade Gala, a black-tie affair at the New York Hilton, on September 21st. Tickets for the event are on sale now, and if you order them before August 15, you can save $50. It is always a great night in the city, and you’ll have the opportunity to personally meet and talk with each of the three Grand Marshals.
