Mercedes-Benz Shows Off First Premium Pickup Truck Line

When people want a pickup, there’s no shortage of options with Ford, Toyota, GMC and Chevy being some of the go to choices. The trucks on the market are quite good at what they do, but Mercedes-Benz just announced their first line of trucks that promise to bring a missing piece to the field — a luxury design.

a tough, functional, strong and off-road capable truck

Mercedes-Benz’s X-Class series of pickup trucks will come in two varieties designed for different lifestyles. The X-Class: Powerful Adventurer will go head-to-head with the more established players, going after customers who want a tough, functional, strong and off-road capable truck. For those who never considered buying a pickup, Mercedes hopes the X-Class: Stylish Explorer will win them over with SUV design elements that play to the needs of those looking for an urban lifestyle and family vehicle.

“With the Mercedes-Benz pickup, we will close one of the last gaps in our portfolio,” said Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. “Our target: we want to offer customers vehicles matching their specific needs. The X-Class will set new standards in a growing segment.”

“a pickup that knows no compromise”

Volker Mornhinweg, head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, added that the “X-Class will be a pickup that knows no compromise. Ladder-type frame, high-torque six-cylinder engine, and permanent all-wheel drive are compulsory for us. As an added value we bring safety, comfort, agility, and expressive design – in other words, everything that distinguishes vehicles bearing the Mercedes star. We will thus appeal to new customers who have not considered owning a pickup before.”

Mercedes says the new pickup line will launch in late 2017 in Europe, Australia, South Africa and Latin America, but American customers will have to sit tight. When asked about a US launch, the company noted that “while a pickup is under consideration for the US market at some point, no timeline is available for a decision to be made.”
