Deutschland 83

Germany’s groundbreaking Cold War spy series ‘Deutschland 83’ made history by being the first German language TV series to premier in America in June on SundanceTV and today the first season of the hit show is available to own on DVD.

‘Deutschland 83’, the gripping coming-of-age story set within a suspenseful thriller, follows the real events, culture wars and political realities of Germany during the 1980s. The series is told from the eyes of 24-year-old Martin Rauch/Moritz Stamm (Jonas Nay) as he is forced to act as an East German spy in West Germany. Nothing and no one are as they seem and the events that take place over the course of the series will take you on a journey into a piece of German history that is often left untouched.

Deutschland 83 DVDIf you missed the original run on TV, all eight episodes are available to own on a 3-DVD set, including bonus features that provide an in-depth look at the experiences of the cast and crew.

Kino Lorder, the company behind the show’s DVD release, could’ve released the series with no additional content and it would’ve been a great buy. The bonus features add an extra bonus that makes the release even better.

Cast members Jonas Nay, Sonja Gerhardt and Ludwig Trepte share their experiences working on the series and provide personal insight into their own lives in a post Cold War Germany. The shows creators, Anna and Jörg Winger, also share their journey in creating a show which they consider to be an overlooked moment in Germany’s history.

The goal of ‘Deutschland 83’ was to showcase historical accuracy through a sense of heightened reality and to also make the viewer think about the parallels in some of today’s most talked about political conflicts.

‘Deutschland 83’ is available on DVD for $29.95 ($15.49 on Amazon) or as a digital download on iTunes and Amazon Instant. No Blu-Ray release is available at this time. Two more seasons of the show are also in the works, but no release dates have been announced.
