German researcher Knud Bielefeld has worked to compile a listing of the most popular baby names in Germany in recent years to fill the void of having no official list in the past.  His research goes all the back to 1890, but what is surprising is that for the last three years the names Ben and Mia have remained at the top of the list.

Bielefeld also doesn’t see those two names leaving the top spot anytime soon as they are still becoming more popular in terms of numbers each year.  He commented that when “a name has established itself as being fashionable it stays there for a while.”  Even the names listed in second and third place have stayed the same since 2012.

The popularity of the names Ben and Mia are fairly consistent throughout Germany as they top the list in 12 of Germany’s 16 states.  Only Berlin, Hamburg, Bavaria and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern had different variations of the top names.
