When you need to look up directions, chances are you take out your smartphone and open up Google Maps or Apple Maps to guide you to where you need to go.  Both of those apps can be great resources in most situations, but how about if you are traveling abroad and don’t want to pay for pricey out of network data fees?  Most mapping apps do have the ability to save your directions and provide a limited mapping view for offline use, but we don’t always know where we want to go before we find ourselves disconnected from the network.

Skobbler, a Berlin-based app development company, has recently come out with their ForeverMap 2 for iOS (it was initially released on Android), which is designed to solve the problem of getting directions without an internet connection.  The app costs $2.99 and if you know you will be needing offline access, just download the country or state that you want maps for.  The offline map downloads do not come at an extra charge, so there are no in-app purchases to worry about.  What really sets ForeverMap 2 apart from the competition though is the ability to look up points of interests and even get directions with no online access.  All of that information is included in the offline download.

ForeverMap 2 taps into the powerful OpenStreetMaps and Skobbler’s NGx map technology, which not only looks good but also has route planning info for travel by car, bike, and even walking.  No matter where you want to go, as long as you plan ahead, you can navigate the world from your smartphone without a data connection.

Since it first made its debut in Germany, ForeverMap 2 quickly became the number one commercial mapping app in the country.  It has made some inroads in the UK, but Skobbler wants to take their app mainstream in the United States.  If you find yourself traveling abroad regularly or have a vacation coming up, we recommend taking a look at ForeverMap 2.  For $2.99 this app is a steal and the pricier alternatives don’t even come close to offering this great offline feature set.  You can find the app on the Apple App Store for iOS and the Google Play Store for Android.
