Taste of Berlin

Most Americans are used to the Bavarian specialties when it comes to eating German food, but Germany has a lot more to offer your taste buds, and that is what Taste of Berlin in Brandon, Florida, has set out to offer.

Taste of Berlin is the creation of Holger and Maggie Engel, who for 18 years owned a West Berlin restaurant before moving stateside.  While the menu items may not seem all that different from your regular German menu, the Berlin distinction comes to light with how the food is prepared.  For the past year, locals have flocked to this town’s first German restaurant and have been pleasantly surprised with what they tasted.

Some of the Berlin specialties include the cold potato salad, instead of the more common variation that is served warm, and the Berliner Currywurst, which is a pan-fried brat served with a homemade curry ketchup.  Taste of Berlin’s most popular desert is their warm Berliner Apple Strudel topped with a vanilla sauce.  Don’t expect wildly different items, instead expect to see a variation of your favorites.

You will of course find the more common menu items found in any German restaurant such as pretzels and beer, but its nice to see places offering a taste of another German region for Americans to explore.  Taste of Berlin seems to have great reviews and is open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner.   They are located at 526 Oakfield Dr in Brandon, FL.
