Germany to Air ‘Nazi” Star Trek Episode

After 43 years since it was first broadcast in the United States, German broadcaster ZDFneo believes Germany is ready for the controversal Star Trek episode “Patterns of Force.”  The episode from the second season of the original Star Trek series sees the Starship Enterprise visit the planet Ekos which closely resembled Nazi Germany.  Throughout the episode, the Ekosians are trying to wipe out the entire Zeon race (a neighboring planet) and they adopted all the Nazi institutions including the brown-shirts, salute, the Gestapo and the SS.

This episode was immediately deemed unfit for German audiences as it referred to Nazi Germany as being one of the most efficient societies every created.  Throughout the years, several stations have attempted to bring the episode to German TV sets, and it wasn’t until 1996 that it was shown on German pay TV.  Now this Friday, “Patterns of Force” will be making to public TV where German’s themselves can decide whether they are ready for this once highly controversial piece of television history.
