Sommerfest at Hickory Grove

The Peoria Sport Verein in Illinois is kicking of Summer in German style.  The annual Sommerfest kicks off on Saturday June 11 for a two day family friendly celebration with German food, soccer, and entertainment.  If you find your self in the Peoria area, feel free to pay a visit to the event which is being held at Hickory Grove Park in Dunlap, IL.

This year, the Sport Verein is adding some new attractions including Car Cruis’ns and an Art & Craft Village.  Admission in free and several bands are lined up to bring a variety of entertainment.  Check out the press release below for all the details.

Saturday, June 11th kicks of the Sport Verein’s annual Sommerfest at Hickory Grove Park.  This two day event celebrates the beginning of summer German style with German food, soccer, and entertainment.   This is a family friendly event.

Hickory Grove Park is at 12503 Hickory Grove Rd., Dunlap is just north of Peoria.  Take Route 40 (old Rt 88) North to Hickory Grove Rd.  Turn east and look for additional signs.
This year’s event has some added feature attractions including Car Cruis’ns on both days and an Art and Craft Village on Sunday.

Saturday June 11th – 9 AM to 9 PM
Owners of American classic cars and motorcycles are encouraged to participate in a Cruis’n from 2:00 pm to 7 pm.

From 3:00 – 7:00 pm the local band the Player’s Club will be performing.  The band plays funk, blues, and rock music.  Check out their Face book page:  www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=74623773067

Gates open on Saturday at 9:00 am for soccer matches featuring local players.
German beer and wine and other beverages will be available from 11:00 am on along with a sandwiches:  Brats, Heidelburgers, and hot dogs.

Admission is free on Saturday, however, donations will be accepted to cover the cost of the entertainment.

Sunday, June 12th – Noon to 8 PM
On Sunday there will be a German Car and Motorcycle Cruis’n from noon to 5:00 pm.

Also our first Arts and Craft Village opens featuring a variety of handmade items from local handicrafters.   A German gift tent will be open offering a number of imported items from Germany for sale.

Al’s Pals and the Vogel Musik Quartet will be playing German music in the afternoon.
Other activities will include:  soccer, folks dancing, Bingo, and a shooting tent.  Air gun shooters have the opportunity to earn prizes.  A newly refurbished playground is available for the kids along with face painting.

Complete dinner available on Sunday as well as a sandwich line.  Food served on Sunday includes:  Bratwurst, Heidelburgers, Hot Dogs, German Potato Salad, Sauerkraut, Slaw, and dessert.
